Desso AirMaster® with EcoBase™ backing is Highly Commended at Australian Sustainability Award for its health and wellbeing and environmental design values

28 October 2014

On October 23, Desso, a leading global carpets and sports pitches company received the Highly Commended Award from the prestigious Australian BPN 2014 Sustainability Awards1) for its innovative DESSO AirMaster® carpet that reduces the amount of fine dust in the indoor environment.

Desso's vision is to produce highly creative, environmentally responsible products that contribute to health and wellbeing, based on the insight that we spend 90% of our time indoors.

As a Cradle to Cradle® company, Desso is also committed to developing products that can be brought back and recycled in a non-toxic closed loop, the foundation for a regenerative circular economy. Through a rigid Cradle to Cradle® assessment process, Desso strives to ensure its products consist of healthy materials, positive for human health and for the planet.

As part of its search for products that contribute to health and wellbeing, Desso created the DESSO AirMaster®, uniquely engineered to capture more of the fine dust indoors than other flooring products. It is eight times more effective than regular carpets at retaining the fine dust2).

In addition, the AirMaster® comes with the EcoBase™ , a polyolefin based backing, which is both non-toxic and PVC-free. EcoBase™ achieved Cradle to Cradle® Silver Certification for reaching a level where 100% of the materials are positively defined3)  as well as being 100% recyclable in Desso's production system.

The DESSO AirMaster® carpet is available with ECONYL® 100% regenerated yarn, , part of which comes from Desso's recycling processes. ECONYL® also contains material recycled from fishing net waste, retrieved from the seas in partnership with local communities. One such initiative is theHealthy Seas initiative4) where Desso is a member.

“its inspirational” Cradle to Cradle® “closed loop material cycle and the use of stray fishing nets, which also brings commercial benefit to developing communities. The Australian design industry should note the importance of the combination of these attributes, particularly in light of the high churn rates from office refurbishment in the commercial world.”

The judges

“We are of course thrilled to receive this commendation from the BPN Awards. We firmly believe that we can make commercially successful products that also have a very positive impact on human health and the environment and products like the AirMaster® prove this to be true. We are doubly pleased that our vision gets recognition in this way, which we hope may encourage other businesses to consider designing products that improve health and wellbeing and helps us shift towards the circular economy.”
