In signing a partnership agreement with the Hamburg-based Environmental Protection Encouragement Agency (EPEA), DESSO has become the first carpet manufacturer in EMEA to adopt the Cradle to Cradle design.

It marks DESSO's radical decision to move beyond "mere" sustainability in producing its carpets and artificial grass, making a fundamental, sweeping advance in its already impressive environmental credentials.

We are going beyond sustainability
The urgent need to safeguard the fragile health of our planet is now widely recognised, and sustainability is a term increasingly applied to practices and processes emerging from our new, environmentally aware society.

Many companies now promote the benefits of reducing energy and water consumption, carbon footprint, and waste.

DESSO as well, has been working on the Eco effectiveness and Eco efficiency. Our current energy efficiency index is 73%. Today, waste recycling from our factories exceeds 90%, and all packaging is 100% recyclable.

At our production facility at DESSO in The Netherlands alone, we have reduced energy consumption (per m2 of product produced) by 23% since 1998, resulting in a 23% reduction in CO2 emissions.

At DESSO we are looking beyond our traditional boundaries of sustainability. Instead of retreating into a 'zero' policy of minimal progress and exaggerated caution, we are advancing rapidly towards new horizons.

In embracing the Cradle to Cradle philosophy we are raising our heads, stretching our arms up high, and proudly announcing, 'We are making our impact on the world - and it's a beneficial one'.

Cradle to Cradle Design at DESSO
Cradle to Cradle takes its inspiration from nature's changing seasons, creating continuous cycles of both biological and technical 'nutrients'.

It envisages production design that creates totally waste-free products which are either biodegradable or are recycled in their entirety to provide the raw materials for new goods.

They will have been produced using manufacturing processes which rely on sun-derived energy, and which seek to conserve water, and to embrace social responsibility.

Customers can be sure that such products are made from environmentally safe and healthy materials and are designed so that at their end of their useful lives, they can be biologically or technically recycled.
